The Royal Rangers
Despite overwhelming opposition to the camp from mountain residents and with only 3 of the 5 supervisors present (Biane, Derry, and Ovett), the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to approve the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp in Twin Peaks. Mountain residents in opposition to the camp presented a wide array of irregularities,  discrepancies, contradictions, and false statements made by the promoters of the camp and by the county itself but they were ignored. As a condition of their approval, apparently in anticipation of law suits, the Board of Supervisors, at the behest of the County Counsel, included a requirement that the Royal Rangers indemnify the County and the Board of Supervisors.

A meeting is scheduled for Sunday March 21 to discuss options in preventing the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp from being built. For details Click Here

The Church of the Woods
We have learned that the EIR (Environmental Impact Report) for the proposed Church of the Woods Complex in Rimforest has been given to the county for review and should be released within a few months.

Traffic Signals Hwy 18 and Lake Gregory
At a meeting held on Thursday October 22, 2009, CALTRANS officials stated, over the objections of those in attendance, that the proposed traffic signals at Lake Gregory Drive and Hwy 18 is a "DONE DEAL". CALTRANS officials also stated that it was simple oversights that public comments were not allowed and that residents were not notified about the signal until recently. The signals are to be installed in the Spring of 2010.

CALTRANS officials have also denied any connection between the installation of the signals and the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp in Twin Peaks. Many mountain residents believe this claim to be untrue.

Various organizations and local newspapers believe they have found discrepancies between what CALTRANS officials have stated and what is available in the public records.

CALTRANS has sent out mailers to mountain area residents attempting to explain their reasoning for installing the signals. The mailers appear to have done nothing but increase the frustration with CALTRANS.

CALTRANS installed traffic signals several years ago near the entrance to Lake Arrowhead Village but they were removed within months. The signals caused more problems than they solved.

We believe that, while they may work fine in the summer,  during the winter with heavy fog, ice, and snow these signals will cause more accidents than they are designed to prevent.

St. Sophia Camp Demolished
The owners of the camp, St. Sophia Cathedral of Los Angeles, decided to demolish it after a fire was set in August 2009. The camp, located in Waterman Canyon,  has been abandoned for several years. The camp was closed after flooding and mud flows, as a result of the 2003 fires, caused the death of several people at the camp.

The owners of the camp want the Forest Service or a conservation group to take over the camp and return the site to its natural state.

San Bernardino County Corruption
San Bernardino County has a new distinction, that of being one of the most corrupt in California, if not the entire nation. Ongoing investigations of our county government by the California Department of Justice have produced Three indictments with more expected. These investigations have reached into the highest levels of our county government: Supervisor Biane is listed, so far, as an unindicted co-conspirator as is the Chief of Staff to Supervisor Ovett. Supervisor Derry's former Chief of Staff (Erwin) has been indicted. In the words of Attorney General Brown "What is significant here is [this is] the most appalling corruption case in decades, certainly in the history of San Bernardino County and maybe California itself".

Running Springs
A new residential development is planned north of Highway 330 and south of Old City Creek Road. The owner/developer wants the county to change the current zoning from HT/SD-Res to HT/SD (PRD-2010-XX) (hilltop/special developmnt/planned residential development-2010-XX). This would allow the creation of 43 residential lots and 12.14 acres of open space on 27.8 acres.

Forest Aid
Forest Aid is looking for volunteers to help plant 20,000 new seedling trees in the San Bernardino National Forest in 2010. for more information please go to: http://www.forestaid.net

Oak Beetle Threat
People in the Inland Empire (including the San Bernardino National Forest) are being asked not to bring firewood purchased or obtained from San Diego County or Arizona into this area. The firewood may contain a hitchhiking beetle, the Gold Spotted Oak Borer, which is devastating Oak Trees in San Diego County and Arizona.

If you are traveling in the area, you should have the following items with you:
Warm Clothing
Winter Gloves
Working Flashlight
 Tire Chains
Shovel
Cheap Non-Clumping Cat Litter
Full or Near Full Tank Of Gas

The shovel is to dig your vehicle out if it becomes stuck, and the cat litter can be placed under and around your tires to provide traction (it is important not to use the clumping type of cat litter). In addition to the items listed, you may also want to have water and snack food on hand in case you are not able to dig yourself out and it becomes a relatively long duration stay.
