The Church of the Woods
The Church of the Woods DEIR (Draft Evironmental Impact Report) has been released for public viewing and comments. This project would:
(Reprinted from the Church of the Woods DEIR, Volume I, Summary)

The Church of the Woods project would include an assembly building/youth center, an
 auditorium and children's ministry, a maintenance building/caretaker unit, a 1,200 seat worship
center, a chapel retreat building, various recreational fields and facilities, and parking. The
facilities would be developed on 37 acres in the community of Rim Forest.

The proposed project would result in the development of approximately 23 acres (63
percent) of the project site (9.4 acres of structures, drives, walks, and drainage features; 13.8
acres of sports fields, play areas, recreation, landscaping, and landscaped manufactured slopes).
The remaining 13.7 acres (37 percent) of the site would be retained as open space, including
hiking trails and some fuel modification zones within the forested areas.

Vehicular access onto the project site would be provided by a driveway on Highway 18.
A secondary emergency access would be provided along Highway 18 approximately 400 feet
east of the proposed driveway. The proposed project would provide a total of 540 parking
spaces, which would meet and exceed the minimum code requirements.

A permanent fuel modification zone with a minimum width of 100 feet around all
proposed structures, would provide a fire break to deter the spread of a potential forest fire.1 The
extent of the fuel modification boundaries would be determined by the CFFPD based on an
 approved Fuel Modification Plan.

Friends of the Mountain, Inc. is opposed to this project for the same reasons we opposed the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp: Size and Location.

Community meetings were held on Sunday May 16 and Wednesday May 26 at Dr. Hugh Bialecki's office to discuss this project. Representatives from
the Sierra Club Mountains Group, Save Our Forest Association, San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society, Friends of the Mountain, and concerned
 citizens were present.

The county has extended the comments period to June 18. All public comments related to this project must be received

The Royal Rangers
Despite overwhelming opposition to the camp from mountain residents and with only 3 of the 5 supervisors present (Biane, Derry, and Ovett), the San
Bernardino County Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to approve the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp in Twin Peaks. Mountain residents in opposition to
the camp presented a wide array of irregularities,  discrepancies, contradictions, and false statements made by the promoters of the camp and by the
county itself but they were ignored. As a condition of their approval, apparently in anticipation of law suits, the Board of Supervisors, at the behest
of the County Counsel, included a requirement that the Royal Rangers indemnify the County and the Board of Supervisors.

A meeting was held on Sunday March 21, 2010 to discuss options in preventing the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp from being built. The meeting was
organized by the San Bernardino Mountains Safety and Conservation Coalition and focused on a pending law suit against the county.

The law suit will cost an estimated $50,000. Approximately $25,000 has already been pledged by several organizations in support of this action.
Additional donations, letter writing volunteers, and professional assistants willing to provide pertinent information are being sought.

While Friends of the Mountain, Inc. has not officially joined the coalition, we have supported, and will continue to support, their efforts.

Update: The planned lawsuit was filed on March 24, 2010 in San Bernardino County Superior Court.

Traffic Signals Hwy 18 and Lake Gregory
At a meeting held on Thursday October 22, 2009, CALTRANS officials stated, over the objections of those in attendance, that the proposed traffic
signals at Lake Gregory Drive and Hwy 18 is a "DONE DEAL". CALTRANS officials also stated that it was simple oversights that public comments were
not allowed and that residents were not notified about the signal until recently. The signals are to be installed in the Spring of 2010.

CALTRANS officials have also denied any connection between the installation of the signals and the Royal Rangers Adventure Camp in Twin Peaks.
Many mountain residents believe this claim to be untrue.

Various organizations and local newspapers believe they have found discrepancies between what CALTRANS officials have stated and what is
 available in the public records.

CALTRANS has sent out mailers to mountain area residents attempting to explain their reasoning for installing the signals. The mailers appear to have
done nothing but increase the frustration with CALTRANS.

CALTRANS installed traffic signals several years ago near the entrance to Lake Arrowhead Village but they were removed within months. The signals
caused more problems than they solved.

We believe that, while they may work fine in the summer,  during the winter with heavy fog, ice, and snow these signals will cause more accidents
than they are designed to prevent.

CALTRANS posted on-line that installation of these signals will begin May 3, 2010 and will last throughout the Spring.
